Hyundai Elantra Review

Longer, leaner, lower and wider, the new Hyundai Elantra borrows from all the cues of its larger Sonata sibling. Now 2.2 inches longer and an inch wider than the outgoing model and with a wheelbase that is now almost an inch longer, it looks better than ever! It's now on sale at Napleton's Hyundai of Urbana.

What's new and special about the Hyundai Elantra?
  • Standard Elantra gets 43 mpg
  • Coupe-like styling
  • Longer, lower, wider
  • More rear legroom
  • Elantra Hybrid can achieve 54 mpg
  • Available performance-oriented Elantra N-Line is available with manual transmission
For starters, the new Elantra is bigger in almost every aspect. As we mentioned above, it's longer, lower and wider but it offers more interior room than the previous Elantra. There's more headroom, more rear legroom, and more shoulder room throughout. At 14.2 cubic feet, the trunk offers more space than some of its competitors.

In addition to gasoline-power, there is a hybrid model and a high-performance N-Line version that helps complete the Hyundai Elantra lineup.

Hyundai Elantra Review

What about the Elantra's power?

The new Hyundai Elantra is available in five trim levels, including SE, SEL, Limited, Elantra Hybrid and Elantra N-Line. Between the five trims are three engines:
  • A 2.0-liter inline-4 cylinder engine producing 147-horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. It is mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
  • A hybrid 1.6-liter inline-4 coupled with a 32-kW electric motor. It makes 139-horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque from the combination gas engine and electric motor-generator. The engine is mounted to a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
  • A turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-4 cylinder engine that is exclusive to the Elantra N-Line. It manages to make 201-horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque in its role as the Elantra lineup's big honcho. It can be ordered with a six-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with paddle-shift levers. Since it's an N-Line model, it also features a sport-tuned multilink independent rear suspension, larger front brakes, and stiffer powertrain mounts.

An Elantra Walkaround.

Think of the new Elantra as a slightly smaller Sonata. That's right! The Elantra features excellent dimensions and a style Hyundai designers call "parametric dynamics." This style results from distinctive design details made up of intersecting elements on the Elantra's side panels. Designers have stated such a design element was a daring challenge that was previously avoided in car design. Its appearance here helps to reinforce Elantra's "disrupter spirit."

We find a jewel-patterned cascading grille with integrated headlamps while triangular sculpting with bold edging on the grille. The Elantra N-Line has a grille with red character lines, black side sills, N-Line badging and 18-inch wheels. There's also an N-Line rear fascia and diffuser plus a lip spoiler, chrome exhausts, LED projector head, and taillights.

What about inside the Elantra?

The Elantra features a new modern and technical look. A high center console with two 10.2-inch digital displays that span the dashboard's width lends that contemporary appearance. There's a grab handle for the Elantra's front seat passenger to hold on to as the driver practices a bit of Hoonish behavior.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as is the 8-inch color touchscreen display. Audio controls on the steering wheel and along with standard driver-selectable drive modes.

The Elantra N-Line interior features a leather-wrapped steering wheel and N-Line sport seats, with leather bolsters and red accent stitching. Add an N-Line analog gauge cluster and Qi wireless smartphone charging for a truly distinctive interior.

What's standard and what's available on the new Hyundai Elantra?

The new Hyundai Elantra SE, SEL and Limited models are loaded with standard items, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and Hyundai's SmartSense suite of safety assets. Add 8-inch color displays, Bluetooth and HD radio for a compelling feature set.

Standard safety features on the Elantra include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. There is a lane keep assist, lane-follow assist, active high-beam headlights and a driver attention monitor.

From an optional standpoint, add a 10.25-inch digital display screen, BlueLink Connected Car System with three years complimentary service, and wireless smartphone charging. Finally, connect to your car with Hyundai's Premium package, which includes a voice recognition system that recognizes commands like "turn the air conditioning on" or take me to the closest drive-through coffee emporium. Technology is a wonderful thing!

Optional safety features include blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic assist with automatic braking. Highway Driving Assist and a safe exit warning let you know when it's safe to open your door on the vehicle's traffic side.
