Hyundai Sonata Review

It was the car that helped fuel the renaissance of the Hyundai brand. And it continues to get better and better. The new eighth-generation Hyundai Sonata is part of a breed of vehicles that shows the sedan is not dead. Heck, it's not even on life-support. It's alive and kicking and available today at Napleton's Hyundai of Urbana.

This is the best Sonata yet with tons of features, including the latest in desirable safety equipment and other unexpected technologies. It is available with a choice of three engines ranging from the base 2.5-liter inline-4 of the Sonata SE and Sonata SEL that makes 191 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque. Next up is the 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-4 found in the Sonata SEL Plus and Sonata Limited. It features 180 horsepower but 195 lb-ft of torque for more pulling power and EPA fuel economy of 27 city/37 highway. Finally, the Hyundai Sonata fleet's hot-rod, the Sonata N-Line, receives its motivation from a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 pushing out 290 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque, all while maintaining an EPA estimated 23 city/33 highway.

All Hyundai Sonatas are front-wheel-drive. They all utilize an excellent 8-speed automatic transmission.

In addition to these normal gas-powered Sonata models, a Hyundai Sonata Hybrid features a 2.0-liter inline-4 engine making 150 horsepower and 139 lb-ft of torque. It is mated to an AC permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor-generator producing 51 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. The power source makes 192 horsepower with mileage estimates of 50 mpg city/54 mpg highway.

Hyundai Sonata Review

How does the Hyundai Sonata look?

The new Hyundai Sonata features the brand's sensuous sportiness, which was introduced with this current generation. One of the boldest designs to come along, it presents to rave reviews, thanks to its attention-getting features, such as the innovative light bars that are running up the hoodline from the corners of the LED headlights. Chrome brightwork imparts a distinctive look to the Sonata's greenhouse for more added style. Filled with attractive good looks, the Sonata's profile is coupe-like, elegant and sleekly cool.
Base Sonata models include a bright grille and a single hidden tailpipe. Higher-line models feature a gloss black grille with twin-tip exhaust pipes. Air curtain side vents help to sweep wind past the front wheels, while aero strakes channel air off the taillamps at the rear to reduce fuel sapping turbulence.

What about the Sonata's interior?

The interior of the new Hyundai Sonata includes an airy contemporary view that incorporates the latest in style and technology. These include very supportive front seats that remain comfortable even after hours behind the wheel. Other innovations are aboard as well. A standard 8-inch touchscreen display or a large 10.25-inch flatscreen that's optional on the SEL Plus but standard on the Sonata Limited.
Modernizing the Sonata was another goal of the Hyundai designers who have seen fit to include new transmission selector buttons rather than a traditional shift lever.

What's standard and what's available?

The Hyundai Sonata is available in five trim levels ranging from SE, SEL, SEL Plus, N-Line and Limited models. Depending on trim selected, the range of standard features can vary. Here's a brief lineup:
  • Sonata SE: Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, an eight-inch touchscreen entertainment system, six-way manually-adjustable driver's seat and LED head- and taillights. Active safety features are on-board as well. They include lane-keeping assist, forward-collision alert with automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality.
  • Sonata SEL: SEL adds blind-spot monitoring with collision avoidance assist, heated front seats, 8-way power seats, an enhanced infotainment system with satellite radio and Blue Link remote vehicle access. The $2,200 Convenience Package includes a 12.3-inch display, Qi Wireless charging, a Panoramic sunroof and second-row a/c vents.
  • Sonata SEL Plus: Includes the 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, the 12.3-inch display cluster, suede/leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and more.
  • Sonata N-Line: The high-performance version of the Sonata features a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder, steering wheel-mounted paddle shift levers and available high-performance summer tires,
  • Sonata Limited: The Limited includes a panoramic sunroof, blind view monitor, a leather interior, head-up display, power-adjustable front passenger seat and surround-view camera, and 12-speaker Bose audio system.
  • Remote Smart Parking Assist is standard on the Limited and is one of the more innovative features on the road today. "Smaht Pahk," as it became affectionately known following Hyundai Big Game commercials featuring the technology, lets you drive the Sonata remotely in and out of tight parking spaces, all from outside the vehicle. Think of the Sonata as the World's largest radio control car.

Hyundai Safety Features

The new Hyundai Sonata is loaded with the latest developments in technology and safety features, including Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with pedestrian detection, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Following Assist and a Driver Attention warning system. There's also Smart Cruise Control With Stop & Go, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, Safe exit warning and Highway Drive-Assist, which are just a few of the major safeties present on-board.
