The Vehicle of the hour, the new Hyundai Kona is the subcompact SUV crossover that everyone is excited about. It's the perfect around town vehicle that is fun to drive, easy to park and simple to maintain. Best of all, it's on sale now at Napleton's Hyundai of Urbana!
But first, just what is this Hyundai Kona?
The new Hyundai Kona is one of the latest vehicles from the Hyundai Motor America corporation. A five-passenger, four-door hatchback, it features a tiny footprint that allows you to place it almost anywhere, whether in traffic or even in a smallish parking spot.
A choice of two gasoline engines powers the Kona. The Kona SE, SEL and SEL Plus versions get their motivation from a 2.0-liter inline-4 cylinder engine rated at 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. Power goes through the front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel-drive is an available option.
The Night Edition, Limited and Ultimate models use a more potent 175 horsepower 195 lb-ft of torque turbocharged inline four-cylinder mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. It is standard with FWD but offers an available AWD system for those who desire extra grip over when road conditions get dicey.
There is a third version of this subcompact SUV: The Hyundai Kona Electric uses an electric motor making 201 horsepower and 291 lb-ft of torque for instant response. This EV is equipped exclusively with front-wheel-drive and a range of 258 miles on a single charge of the 64 kWh lithium-ion battery. Unfortunately, it is restricted for sale to ten so-called Zero-emission states that include California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Vermont.Â

How does the Hyundai Kona look?
The Hyundai Kona is well-proportioned for its size and includes slanted daylight running lights, hexagonal grille and front LED headlights. Cladding at all four corners helps to give the Kona a beefier appearance.
At the rear, LED taillights finish off the Kona's look, giving it a contemporary feel that shows that Hyundai designers are at the top of their game. There's even an available "floating roof," which can be enhanced with a contrasting color for greater visual impact. Higher trim levels include even more features that set the Kona apart from its competitors.Â
What about inside the Kona?
The interior of the new Hyundai Kona features comfortable seating for five, includes two seats in front with a three-passenger benchseat in the second row. A seven-inch touchscreen display is standard, while an eight-inch touchscreen is the norm when ordering the Kona Ultimate trim level. In case you hope for actual buttons on the dashboard of the Kona, you won't be disappointed. There is a complete array of them, enabling you to push your desired selection.
USB ports are available in the storage cubby at the base of the center console. All models include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with other popular features. An 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat allows precise positioning for drivers of all sizes when stepping up to the Kona SEL Plus. Add to that package Qi Wireless charging and an 8-speaker Infinity premium audio system for that concert hall on wheels experience.
If you need to haul cargo rather than people, feel free to fold down the rear seatback. Doing so will open up the cabin to 45.8 cubic feet of cargo space.Â
What's standard, and what's available on the new Hyundai Kona?
The new award-winning Hyundai Kona is loaded with the latest in safety features and assists. They include automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, driver attention monitoring and more. Blind-spot monitoring is available at added cost.
But that's not all. In addition to all the Kona SE standard features, you'll find a 7-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, 16-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, and more.
Stepping up to the Kona SEL, you'll add the aforementioned blind-spot monitoring, heated front seats, keyless entry and ignition, hidden cargo compartments, roof rails, rear privacy glass, heated side mirrors, HD/Satellite Radio and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
The higher-line Kona SEL Plus includes all of the previous items except when they have been replaced with better equipment. Add an 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat, LED fog lights, self-dimming rear-view mirrors, remote garage door opener, Qi Wireless charging and Hyundai Blue Link system to perform certain functions such as locking /unlocking with a smartphone.
The Kona Ultimate is at the top of the range. As such, it brings a pedestrian detection function to the automatic emergency braking system. Adaptive Cruise Control, an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, a head-up display, navigation, rear parking sensors and automatic high-beam headlamps.

First and foremost, the Hyundai Kona is a city vehicle. That's because it can slip through traffic and squeeze into the tightest of parking spaces. The Kona can do double duty, providing a comfortable vehicle for an around-town excursion or a cross-country road trip.
Whichever engine you choose, your Kona will be adept at both. We enjoy the added boost from the turbocharged 1.6-liter engine, which is clearly enhanced by its well-tuned suspension.
