How does the Tucson look?
Paying homage to some of Europe's finest sport utility vehicles isn't a bad way to go. And European-inspired style is just what the new Hyundai Tucson has loads of. Clean looks with stylish creases are just the beginning with the Tucson. The trademark hexagonal Hyundai grille is here, as is the blackout trim along the cabin. It's an elegant yet understated look.
Cladding around the wheel wells lends a sense of uprightness to the Tucson's overall stature.
On the backside, there is a reverse-view camera that allows you to see what's around you before reversing. The sleek liftback includes a roof spoiler that leaves a clean profile when viewed from the side. It's a mature but sporty-looking vehicle that has a lot to offer. SE and Value models ride on 17-inch wheels, while SEL, Limited and Ultimate hit the 18s while the Hyundai Tucson Sport enjoys 19-inch wheels.
How about inside the new Hyundai Tucson?
In a word, describe the interior of the Hyundai Tucson as dapper. User-friendly controls are all around, as are smart touches, like the use of YES Essentials cloth seating that Hyundai claims is stain, odor and static resistant. If leather is more your style, jump up to the Limited and Ultimate trim levels, where it is offered as standard equipment.
A full-service infotainment system is standard in the new Tucson. The 7-inch touchscreen display controls Sirius XM Satellite radio (Subscription). Buyers can also take advantage of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Stepping up to the Limited and Ultimate trim levels will get a larger 8-inch display screen plus in-dash navigation.
Cargo space is 31 cubic feet behind the second-row seat. Fold them down to find 61.9 cubic feet behind the first row.Â
Five Tucson Trim Levels
Five trim levels are available on the Tucson. These include the base SE, Value, SEL, Sport, Limited and Ultimate models. Tucson SE and Value models include the 164 horsepower 2.0-liter inline-4 engine with front-wheel-drive, 17-inch alloy wheels, power folding side mirrors, 6-way driver's seat, Bluetooth and Smartphone integration.
The Value model adds other items, including blind-spot monitoring, an 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat, Satellite Radio and keyless ignition.
The Tucson Sport includes LED headlights, and an Infinity audio system, while the Limited trim comes with leather seating, a heated steering wheel and a 360-degree around view camera. Finally, the Ultimate model is complete with an 8-inch infotainment screen with navigation, a panoramic sunroof and adaptive cruise control. The Hands-Free Smart Powered Tailgate is our favorite feature: instead of waving a foot under the rear bumper, approach the Tucson with the key fob in your pocket; The rear hatch will open automatically.
What about safety?
It's all here, too. Earning accolades from both NHTSA and IIHS, the Tucson makes a strong showing in crash tests from both testers. Part of that is due to the extensive use of high-strength steel to protect occupants in the case of an incident. Standard driver-assistance features such as lane-keep-assist and automated emergency braking add extra protection.
Additional safety items are added as trim levels climb. They are not limited to some of the following: Blind Spot Collision Warning and rear cross-traffic collision warning are both included with the Tucson Value model. The model also includes forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection to monitor for bystanders.
