The Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid, on sale now at Napleton's Hyundai of Urbana
The Hyundai Ioniq is the three-headed spear of the Hyundai fleet. Available in three styles of power ranging from the Ioniq Hybrid, the Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) and Ioniq Electric Vehicle (EV), these three vehicles serve three different purposes. Two of them are on sale now at Napleton's Hyundai of Urbana.
What is the Hyundai Ioniq?
The Hyundai Ioniq is a compact hatchback sedan that is capable of carrying five passengers. Some of the most Eco-friendly vehicles in the Hyundai portfolio. Available in three different models, there is an Ioniq for every taste.Â
- The Ioniq Hybrid: Powered by a 1.6-liter Atkinson-cycle inline-4 cylinder engine producing 104 horsepower and 109 lb-ft of torque. It receives an additional 43 horsepower from a 32-kW permanent magnet synchronous motor-generator for a total system output of 139 horsepower.
- The Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid: Also powered by a 1.6-liter Atkinson-cycle inline 4-cylinder, it makes 104 horsepower and 109 lb-ft of torque as in the regular Ioniq Hybrid. It is joined by a 44.5-kW magnet synchronous motor-generator that adds 60 horsepower for a combined system total of 156 horsepower.Â
- The Ioniq Electric Vehicle: a totally-electric vehicle. It needs to plug into a charging device for more energy when the onboard batteries have been depleted. It utilizes an 88-kW electric motor-generator producing 134 horsepower and 218 lb-ft of torque. Currently, the Ioniq EV is available exclusively in 13 states, but none are located within our operating area.
All Hyundai Ioniq vehicles have good records for reliability and resale value.
Comfortably refined, the Hyundai Ioniq gives little in the way of hints that it is an alternatively-powered vehicle. In other words, there is very little indication that you are running a gasoline /electric vehicle. That seamlessness is the vehicle's best feature: The ability to go on and on with no special preparation or needs before hitting the open road.
The operations are non-descript, which is a good thing. There's a normal shift lever and some trim levels include paddle-shift levers for those who like driving with an enthusiast's style with drivers who like to shift it themselves. It's an easy-going vehicle that displays easy muscle when needed, along with smooth drivetime characteristics and nicely modulated brake response. In other words, it works just the way you want it to.Â
What does the Hyundai Ioniq look like?
While some hybrid vehicles have taken on jelly bean shapes, others have launched into outer space. The Hyundai Ioniq does neither. Instead, Hyundai has chosen a more mainstream appearance that even looks upscale to boot. Features include LED headlights and daytime running lights and taillights. A new-style mesh-type grille features prominently on the new Ioniq and is set off by new front and rear bumper fascia.
New wheel designs and side sill moldings help to finish off this exceptional vehicle. The Ioniq is available in Blue, SE, SEL and Limited trim levels.Â
How about a look inside the new Ioniq?
The beauty of the new Hyundai Ioniq is that it doesn't look space-age inside either. Conventional but beautifully laid out, it features exceptional build quality with eco-friendly materials such as recycled plastics, sugar cane, wood and even volcanic stone.
The base model is equipped with an eight-inch infotainment screen, while the upper trim levels feature a 10.25-inch display. Easy to figure out, the controls are even easier to use and are logically place where they are within close access of the driver. There are even this year's must-haves: Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and Qi wireless charging.
What about features?
Start with Hyundai's Smart Sense safety suite of driver assists. They include forward-collision avoidance, lane-keeping assistance, automatic high beams and driver-attention monitoring. The Ioniq SE includes Hyundai's Blue Link connected services, heated side mirrors, heated front seats and a power-adjustable driver's seat. Dual-zone climate control is here to add to the cool quotient.
Other items come into the picture as you climb the trim level ladder. They include the SEL's adaptive cruise control, LED head- and taillights, wireless Qi Charging, 17-inch alloy wheels, power sunroof, lane-following assistance and forward-collision avoidance with pedestrian detection.
The Ioniq Limited includes a 10.25-inch touchscreen display, leather upholstery, rear air vents, highway driving assist, navigation, an 8-speaker Harman Kardon audio system and front and rear parking sensors.Â
